Spray polishes for polishing while you dust contain solvents, and often strong perfumes. They are best avoided. Damp-dusting is an effective way of removing dust while cleaning.

If you need to polish furniture or wood floors, most wax polishes are solvent-based and perfumed. As an alternative, try true beeswax polish or the Allergy Shop’s low-allergen furniture polish.

True beeswax polish is relatively trouble free. The beeswax is held in a solvent, often turpentine, linseed oil or methylated spirits; and while it might bother you as you use it, the solvent disperses very fast and leaves no trace. Polish furniture once or twice a year only. Major supermarkets stock a pure beeswax polish called Lord Sheraton, which is based on natural linseed oil and pine turpentine. Quince Honey Farm, The Healthy House and The Green Catalogue sell a beeswax polish by post. The Healthy House also sell other natural solvent-based polishes. Livos make a range of natural-solvent based polishes, and will supply samples to test.
